Purpose is about acknowledging the distinction between being in motion and being in action.  Motion is random, unguided movement that lacks a plan and may or may not produce the desired results.  Many individuals and organizations are characterized by lots of motion.  Actions, on the other hand, are deliberate endeavors based on reasoned analysis and intelligent choice that are outcome-driven.  Actions fit within a larger design of something we are trying to accomplish.  Motion is a loose confederacy of activity while actions come together to achieve purposeful intent.  What puts someone in the lead is that there is a design and intention between their actions.  People achieve leadership because their thinking allows them to form workable plans of action.  Beyond themselves, effective leaders guide their communities along a path of purposeful design and encourage members to align their actions with that design.  By contrast, ineffective leaders occupy the driver’s seat without knowing where they are going.

“Purpose is crucial because of its scope and ubiquity.  It is larger, much larger than any other element in a business formula.  And much more involving.  It is a choice to pursue your destiny—the ultimate destination for yourself and the organization you lead…A successful purpose will incorporate a deeply felt awareness of yourself, your circumstances and your potential calling.”
